For the less knowledgeable, this picture of the Patriarch’s “convoy”, Greek Orthodox of Jerusalem that is, was taken on the Armenian Pacrtriachate Street that leads to the Armenian Quarter. The Patriarch is in the middle on the fifth row, surrounded by Orthodox priests. The tarbooshed guards of honour leading the procession are called qawwās/īn, meaning bowmen in Arabic, that protected Christian processions in Jerusalem during the Ottoman Empire, and until today, symbolically, lead and accompany them.
